Five-Minute TV Star
Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the city's celebration of Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. One day (in late May or early June of 2006 . . . I wasn’t able to find the exact date) approximately 100 sailors paraded across the stage during the taping of an episode of The Late Show with David Letterman. While parading across the stage the word “Sailors” flashed on and off on television screens across the world . . . and the sailors became five-minute TV stars. On June 27, 2007 approximately 100 people, from all walks of life, paraded across the stage during the taping of an episode of The Late Show with David Letterman. While parading across the stage the words “Not Sailors” flashed on and off on television screens across the world . . . and the people, from all walks of life, became five-minute TV stars . . . and I was one of them! It was great fun volunteering and taking part in David Letterman’s silly skit. But now I need to figure out how to be invited as a guest on his show and be interviewed about The Top 10 Ways to Ruin The First Day of 5th Grade. Inside connections to The Late Show will be greatly appreciated . . .
I stopped by Rupert Jee’s Hello Deli - which is just below the offices of The Late Show with David Letterman and around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater (where The Late Show is taped). Rupert has been an occasional guest on The Late Show. David Letterman has also featured Rupert’s deli on The Late Show. And . . . Rupert and the Hello Deli are also featured in The Top 10 Ways to Ruin The First Day of 5th Grade! Anyway, I gave Rupert a signed copy of my book and Valeria (my wife) took the obligatory photo of Rupert and myself. Rupert promised to read my book . . . and keep it on display in his deli. If you are ever in New York City, stop by his deli and grab a delicious sandwich and check out The Top 10 Ways to Ruin The First Day of 5th Grade - that is sitting on the counter of his deli.
